Unfortunately, not just the poor beagles but especially farmed animals who have been selected and bred to be gentle, child-like, peaceful creatures who do not fight back. 😢😢

So hard to read, even though I knew this already. I have a beagle, and this hurts. I’ll do anything I can to share this article with others. It’s so true that “ the truth hurts.”

Great article. 💚😢 “Beagles were first chosen as experimental subjects at the height of the Cold War in the 1950s.² After the United States dropped two atom bombs on Japan, it occurred to the government that someone should start looking into how radiation might affect living beings. While scientists initially planned to use monkeys for these experiments – in which animals would be subjected to radiation levels 1,000+ times what was considered safe – it was ultimately decided that it would be too hard to breed and control the hundreds of monkeys necessary for the tests. These new experiments would require a species that was fine with being poked and prodded as lethal doses of radiation slowly burned away their bodies over weeks, months, or years.³ There was only one species that trusted us so much that it would tolerate this extended torment: the dog. And beagles, because of their loving nature, were the perfect test subjects.”

Torture can never ever be acceptable for any reason at all. 20th Century and they still like to abuse the animals !! They are immoral humans who abuse animals because it’s cheap !!!

When we compartmentalize and "other" (research subjects, farmed animals or people with whom we disagree), the harm we do seems unimportant (or even warranted).

Bur when we open our heart and drop our ego (it's not about _me_, or some idea of who I think I am that I feel I have to defend), it is possible to see the "other" (beagle, cow or human) as our self.

Excellent article. Else, in general, nature has created an unlevel playing field with the human great ape against the rest of the species. The systematic torment involving massive number of defenseless individuals bred to endure torture till death is an anthropocentric phenomenon; however if there is a silver lining, it is probably not sustainable.

When we have sacrifice our decency and accept the systemic oppression and imprisonment and Exploitation and torture and killing of others for power and selfishness, we are nothing but a shell of a human being. We must end this culture of greed and power. We must protect our brethren without a voice. Together we can turn the tide.

Great Article Wayne, as usual. It’s so sad that we can’t get the rest of society to care enough about the Animals to actually get up and do something about it. If the majority of society would care enough to show up and support animal activists then we could really get somewhere with helping these Animals. I thought that maybe when people saw or read how unconstitutionally the courts were towards you and the others in DxE, to the point of illegally taking your rights from you, that maybe that would wake people up. To see not only the abuse of the animals being allowed to continue, but also the fact that judges were blatantly breaking the law to protect, the wealthy corporations and in turn fuck the citizens. These judges didn’t even care how biased and “bought” they appeared to the public eye. But if more people , says thousands, had shown up for the rescues and at the courts, then eyes may be opened. We must all try harder to get our neighbors to pay attention and show up

You were a cute kid! Love that picture. I agree with the your use of the word political narcissism. Why can't we all discuss the issues without getting hurt? This seem to be a new thing.

I think humans are the only animals (with one exception, the cetacean family) that can truly hate anyone! But I think the main problem is people not caring or not caring enough when it comes to animal abuse. I agree that the best way to change things is in the group as a whole, in other words to change the culture of what is considered acceptable.

Wayne, this is so powerful about beagles and I did not know that history of using beagles for radiation tests. I knew they were used because of their docile trusting dispositions, which is so evil if it was in a movie you'd think it was satire.

Wayne, I have tried to reach you a number of ways to show you the painting of you I did called Threat of Compassion. It has been submitted to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Outwin competition and if chosen- even as a finalist -would be in a show in DC in 2025, with my write up : In the painting Threat of Compassion, riot police encroach upon animal activist Wayne Hsiung. Devoted to the animals' plight, Hsiung’s actions question whether people have the right to rescue animals in distress from factory farms. As an attorney Hsiung has defended that right. Before being taken into custody he tightly hugs his dear friend Oliver - a rescue from the Yulin dog meat festival. A piglet, lamb and turkey huddle close, representing some of those Hsiung risks his freedom for.  . /Users/janeohara/Desktop/OHara,Jane_Threat_of _Compassion_jpg.jpg

Im afraid the image won't come through here and would love if you'd find me (Jane O'Hara Projects) on IG, FB or jo@janeoharaprojects.org so I can show you the image.

Great story, Wayne and thank you for addressing, informing on this issue - I've been contemplating some related factors:

1. There are Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) as gatekeepers to approval of human research studies and could result in revision of research methodology (watering down) to be approved. For non-human animals, it's the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) which claims to carefully review animal welfare to approve research, accompanied by inspections of welfare. I am not convinced at all, these "representative committee members" are faculty (insiders and peers), and avveterinarian. I question whether they ever decline approval given what we know. What the heck are the criteria being applied in their reviews...!? Also,

2. There are simulations/prototypes available and funding should be allocated to development of that technology NOT breeding programs! Animals are not humans, all results are dubious and they know it - articles' closing statement is always, ["...more research is required..."]. Like we don't understand so perpetuates how it's always been done for millions in funding available from HHS and FDA.

Your writing is always so thoughtful and well written. Each one teaches me something or shows me a new way to think. Thank you. I, too, grew up in a Midwestern small town as the butt and target of many jokes. It truly shows your kind heart that your experience has prompted you to want to show kindness and love to all beings. May this trial allow the world to see what we are doing to these poor animals and to each other. Stay strong, my friend.

Vivisection is horrific and completely unnecessary especially now that alternative non-animal methods are not only readily available but also provide more accurate results. The American Antivivisection Society (AAVS) is an excellent non- profit working towards ending the use of animals in science.

It’s difficult to comprehend such gross indifference to animal suffering. Animals in labs being sadistically tortured to collect useless information that’s submitted in absurd reports. WHY 😭
