Thank you for this very moving and insightful piece, Wayne! More people need to hear Qing's story. Thank you and the other activists for going to trial in September and risking your freedom to tell the true horror and terror that animals experience in so-called "humane" factory farms in court.

I have a low opinion of humanity and "human dignity". Sorry. Some facts:

According to the Pope in a tweet, "It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer and die needlessly." Yet, he does absolutely nothing to back up this statement, sending the message instead that "human dignity" is an oxymoron and a fraud like "reality TV" and "humane slaughter." AM I RIGHT? Stanley Milgram got it right when he suggested that the human personality could not be trusted to respond to ethical situations with compassion. We are too proud, too arrogant, too selfish, and too cruel…. We indulge our cleverness and convenience ignobly. AM I RIGHT?

Re: Laudato Si'

In one list of the care for creation, there is only one that mentions animals. The rest concern humans, especially embryos. Pope Francis may talk about animals and caring for them. There isn't one place where he says people should close down factory-farming systems and slaughterhouses and switch to plant-based diets. He NEVER says that animal abuse is a sin. And he has at least ONE BILLION followers he can influence. "...a Neapolitan peasant, having learned from his parish priest that animals are not 'moral persons,' can go home after Mass and with a clear conscience give his donkey a thorough taste of the switch." -- "Men, Beasts, and Gods - A History of Cruelty and Kindness to Animals" -- Gerald Carson (1972)

#4 Laudato Si’ 92

“We have only one heart, and the same wretchedness which leads us to mistreat an animal will not be long in showing itself in our relationships with other people. Every act of cruelty towards any creature is contrary to human dignity.” YET, THE POPE DOES OR SAYS NOTHING CONDEMNING FACTORY FARMING and its "benign" extensions; nor bullfighting, trophy hunting, whaling, sport fishing, and all the other animal-exploiting industries.

#5 Laudato Si’ 117

“When we fail to acknowledge as part of reality the worth of a poor person, a human embryo, a person with disabilities – to offer just a few examples – it becomes difficult to hear the cry of nature itself; everything is connected.” YET, HE DOES OR SAYS NOTHING CONDEMNING LEGALLY-PROTECTED, SOCIALLY-ACCEPTABLE ANIMAL EXPLOITATION! If shown a pig embryo and a human embryo well into a month, would the Pope know which one to take into account? Does he even care if unborn animals suffer as their mothers are slaughtered?

“…our prevailing ways of thinking about animals should make us skeptical of our claim that it is our rationality that distinguishes us from them. “ Gary Francione

This is the truth. I have seen this with my own eyes. I have witnessed their suffering yet people fight to their very core not to believe it. I find this fight harder even than any of the other social justice movements as we add the layer of speciesism.
