“There is but one thing that can never turn into suffering and that is the good we have done.“

My mom died two years ago this November, I started writing this book to cope with the grief and guilt and hopefully to help others learn from my experience. I had to stop it because it became overwhelming but you have inspired me to start back on it.

No matter what kind of being we hurt, love, and lose, the words above from Maurice Maeterlinck’s book Wisdom and Destiny were a sadly late but life renewing epiphany for me in a single sentence:

“There is but one thing that can never turn into suffering and that is the good we have done.“

You’ve done so much good and will do so much more such as writing this blog and continuing to love other beings but more wisely and well, that deeper happiness awaits you.

That's really great to hear, Sally. Writing can be cathartic. It has been for me.

It really is wonderful that you can tell your story on grief with such openness. Thank you so much for that.

All the fur babes we lose over the years have their story and I must admit there is much guilt, misplaced or not, on my part. Living in a country, Brazil, where so many dogs and cats are living on the streets we cannot save them all, we just do what we can, but it never seems to be enough.

What else I can do but cry... Love is an infinite well. It's hard to feel how much we receive from those we love. I hope I give (and gave) to my two and four legged loved ones as much they have given me. Just their existence makes every single bit of this journey so worth it! Thank you for this beautiful post.

Thank you for sharing your experiences so openly. This year has been very difficult so far and I am not yet able to take positives from it. It started in early January when my best friend, my dog Holly, was diagnosed with terminal osteosarcoma. Within a few days, I heard my aunt had passed suddenly from cancer when we all thought she was doing well. Within another 3 weeks, my grandma, who I was very close to, contracted and died from covid-19. Then a few months later in late May, I finally had to say goodbye to Holly. The worst day of my life. 5 months on and the pain is no less, yet perhaps easier to bear. I know the grief will never leave me. I love the idea of turning this love into a positive lesson, I just need to figure out what that lesson is. A friend said to me "it hurts so much because you loved her so much" and that message has helped me.

That's awful Jennifer. I'm so sorry. I can tell just by these words that you did have a deep love. That's a beautiful thing, even as it's so painfully hard.

I needed your stories on grief and coping with it so very much. I will send a few favorite quotes on grief this weekend. The world needs to hear your voice—I’m hoping you will someday find a publisher that knows how to put your writing on the national best-seller list so more people can be helped by your inspiring mind and spirit and your willingness to risk all for compassion and to learn how to connect on a higher level. The name of this blog alone would draw so many in to read a well-promoted book to find the peace and love and comfort and strength so many are seeking.

Hay House would be the perfect publisher! Wayne Dyer’s books, including ‘The Power of Intention’, were all published by Hay House.
