While I’d have missed some important activism and fun events without it, it’s relatively shallow and passive. It of course encourages groupthink and nasty, ever-more-extreme and intolerant echo chambers. There are few things that feel more pointless, alienating, and demoralizing than trying to persuade someone online who is more interested in trolling, “owning”, or siccing a mob on you. So I very rarely talk about issues or even values on any social media. Substack is semi-participatory, but we can go further in building active connections. There are many good ideas and promising projects among the author and readers of the site - I’ve no doubt.
