Social norms are exactly what allow animal lovers to eat animals. I used to be one. Now I see it, but I couldn't for s long time. And I knew animals were persons. I think there must be many ways to shift these norms. But these trials most definitely are the cutting edge. I love the stories from Iowa. They give me great hope! Thank you, Wayne.

Thanks again for sharing this very interesting piece and the part about the prosecutor shifting from outrage to caring gives hope for animals.

Wayne, this was a powerful reminder that great losses are actually enormous victories if we harness the lessons, instead of allowing the loss to devour our hope. Thank you. Your work is inspirational as I have to endure a legal fight myself.

Then the judge refused to remove a juror who admitted she was biased against animal advocates because her family raised animals for slaughter. This potential juror — who also stated she was friends with the prosecution’s lead investigator — showed clear animosity towards animal rights advocates. But because the judge was able to “rehabilitate” her (i.e., get her to say that she’d follow the law, regardless of her feelings) she was allowed to stay on the panel. This was a clear violation of my constitutional rights, as every defendant has a right to a fair and impartial jury under the Sixth Amendment.

I had a similar experience during jury selection in a criminal case in Queens County Supreme Court. I had wanted to be excused from jury duty. When the Judge asked me, I replied, "I'm not comfortable with the legal system because it's not about justice, but about accommodating the law to benefit those in power" (or something to that effect I said). But then he asked if I'd follow his instructions, and I replied, "I'll go by my beliefs." Then he said "Exempt!"
