Thank you, Wayne, for keeping us updated on the latest. There is just no easy solution for battling unbridled GREED.
Yes, GREED. What other possible reason could there be for industrial farming to treat their animals so brutally?
What other reason could there be for them to vehemently fight changes that would improve the lives of those animals?
Dollar dollar dollar bill, y’all
BTW, I absolutely, positively could not be more impressed with the work you are doing for animals, Wayne. Keep fighting the good fight. We are with you!
I was there and the conditions at the Vera Dairy are an absolute nightmare...a horror movie. And so many of their practices are ILLEGAL! dXe is an amazing group. I am so lucky to be able to work with them. We are the glass walls.
I put the blame for all this unnecessary animal abuse and suffering squarely on the consumers for demanding animal products, all kinds. It is their greed, too, and insensitivity, that enables these businesses to exist and continue.
Consider:
But I would like to know why you and the majority of “progressives” show no awareness of or interest in or compassion for the animals who share the planet with us. Progressives talk about the planet and climate change in a very abstract way. To read you and others, it’s as if nothing and nobody exists outside the human isolation chamber – a self-constructed prison containing only ourselves and our ever-mounting mountains of trash. “Out there” is “the climate” which we have to consider because our abuse of the earth and its creatures, whom we are either exterminating or incarcerating, is affecting the human animal’s pursuit of happiness (shopping, money, materialism) adversely.
I will conclude by saying, simply, that our species is the one species on Earth that no other species, animal or plant, needs in order to thrive, except perhaps for certain host-specific microbes. We bring misery, terror, depletions and poisons everywhere we penetrate ourselves into. Is this going to continue into Eternity? Are mainstream “progressives” congenitally incapable of even acknowledging the existence of beings outside ourselves? We are ruining the planet for all these creatures who are NOT ruining the planet. Are these beings really not in your consciousness at all? It isn’t just “Trumpism,” narrowly construed, that’s the problem. Toward our planet and its other-than-human individuals, species, homes and habitats, our species, with miniscule exceptions, is ALL TRUMPISM: brutal, callous, pitiless, selfish, sociopathic. --- from the late Karen Davis's email to filmmaker Michael Moore, Nov. 2022, "Why Aren’t Our Fellow Animals on Your Progressive Agenda?"
Thank you for sharing these thoughtful comments Carola! I would just say that consumers are often not really making any meaningful decision at all. Humans are a profoundly social species, and we have great difficulty bucking the trend. That is not good or bad. It's just who we are.
I hear you and agree, Wayne, but your consciousness and that of other animal welfare activists need to include the suffering of marine animals, too. Do you not know what is happening with the industrialization of the Atlantic Coast from MA to VA by offshore wind? Do you not know of the torture and murder of hundreds of marine mammals and untold number of other ocean inhabitants by this murderous industry, with the total buy-in of our federal government (beginning in earnest with the Obama Administration and insanely ramped up by Biden)? PETA has turned their backs on marine animals as it "is not part of their mission." You may think you are all in on so-called "green," "renewable" energy, but do your homework and think again. You either stand to fight for ALL animals or you just focus on your particular species and ignore the suffering of the rest. I choose the former.
Please check out https://www.green-oceans.org/ to see what we are up against. Thank you for your true heart and work.
I think this piece expresses your existing skill/experience and your thirst for new skill/experience clearly. Your successes in court, both decisional wins and incidental exposures of fallacy and corruption, are strengths that can draw new young lawyers with different minds and backgrounds into this struggle. This struggle is about cultivating an appetiite for difference, diversity, change, complexity, newness, health, metabolical movement, growth, in society en large, far and wide. The struggle is to revitalize a species, the human species, that has learned to over-package and over-typify its own offspring for certain kinds of efficiency, leading to what appears to be an active aggressive cult of closed-mindedness (--- that seems so obvious in the current Presidential administration, maybe even more in the group of sly nefarious mechanics that Trump has assembled than in Trump himself.) All the above mentioned things you point to either verbatim or implicitly in this piece. These things manifest in speciesism, resistance to/reaction against the other in any form. I am trying to reflect what I see in this piece because it does seem to be more on the track of strategy than other recent pieces. I think your other recent pieces, where you're looking around at broad trends in movements and innovations, have fed this strategy thinking too. I just would emphasize that your interest in change, in other species, and in fostering learning and growing amongst the people you litigate against in court, speak to me especially of something I have not seen you address specifically: the possibility of coaching/cultivating the potential of other, young and __different__ lawyers specifically, on the hunch that law skllls+diversity have an essential promise in this field. Difference being catalytic . . . in so many ways... thank you for writing and thinking on this piece.
Thank you for this note, and I agree that coaching more young lawyers is important. Better yet, we need a culture and network of ambitious lawyers. There are folks working hard on that whom I hope to support...
Yes, culture also. The line between "common daily life" and "legally valid" life should be studied. People in a community have to easily -- not under duress -- feel a community's possibilities and its regularities as its life-breath, as common knowledge, landscape more or less. Many communities that start as nations came with territory and institutions that were mortally and legally guarded against enemies such as Britain was to the US, and came with a tone of off-limits, scriptural and military doom. Further, law was already an old, pricey, doomful and highly rigidified institution at the time of the start of the US: it held hands and prayed together with slavery and witch-hunting. But we know much better about how to live now than we did then, and we should allow the knowledge of life to interpret the knowledge of death, not vice-versa. The sense of life can excel the sense of duress finally. Culture means growth, generation from one generation to another. A serious and thorough account of what works and does not work in a communities, where are privacy, individualism and excellence to be found in communities, how problems are solved socially, how possibilities are understood, where we are and came from and where we're going, should be part of the fabric of a common narrative, necessarily not ethnic-national or territorial-national but instead spherical, wholistic. Thanks!
Wayne is a terrorist.Wayne needs to be deported back to China.Where he belon. Wayne had ten thousand complaints to the USDA and also to the president and DOGE. Someone initiated a petition to have him deported and sent back to china like the rest of the terrorists..
Appreciate you sharing your thoughts Coleman, and of course I'm sorry if you or anyone else has been negatively affected by the work. But I bet there's a lot we agree on:
Musk has written he thought that the government should not pay to torture millions of animals by roasting them alive, because the industry doesn't want to pay its own bills. Do you agree?
Talk about spewing? Now you're spewing idiot liberal woke agenda driven idiocy, lady you have no clue.. You think guys like him are all wonderful and serving the public and the animals they are not They are serving themselves and it's right under your nose and you cannot see it because you refuse to or you're too ignorant probably both. When he gets.
hammered again and he will.then you can cry. I would bet that he's on an internal terrorist watch list right now. Immigration status and terrorism are now front and center for making these people disappear.
Stop spewing your RACIST comments. Wayne is an intelligent, compassionate and courageous man. We need more men like him and less like you. I should ask you why you feel so threatened by him.
Wayne is a little self-serving s*** like all the rest of these activists. He's going to keep pushing until he gets put in prison for a long time. The same thing. I said about Lil Wayne Pacelli 10 years ago, sooner or later he's going to get caught with his pants down. That's exactly what happened being so smart with all his guile and slick greasy talk, he ends up harassing 20 women. I'd like to know what else Wayne is up to?.That we don't know about and when that's going to come out. All of these self-righteous and arrogant people who think they're too smart for the public. Too smart for the authorities end up disgraced or put in prison. Arrogance only carries you so far.. This is not the time in this country to be pushing your idiotic animal rights agendas.Any action you take will be scrutinized and you will be hammered. Mark my.
You are a large part of the problem as you regress to diversity and other pure politics!
The animal rights movement has itself become blurred with the environmental movement, the LBTGQ movement and other completely unrelated things.
The animal rights movement should now and forever be its own movement because the actual viewing of the pain and devastation of animals is the ONLY thing that grabs and holds people's attention.
Until this Tactic is adopted the raising of huge sums of money and wasteful administration costs will continue to dominate the "doing little going nowhere"facade of animal rights!
I'm not sure i'm following this debate. Did I miss something? I def don't see motherharp as part of the problem; we're all part of the solution here, no? (Including you, TY Jim for the thoughts and compassion)
Yes, so true. And so much of the "environmental" movement has been co-opted by the very industries, corporations, and political enablers it once fought against. Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, Audubon, the Conservation Law Foundation, etc. ad nauseam all traitors to their original founding principles and now no more than the corporate CEOs who control their boards.
Biodiversity is a main reference for people studying ecosystem health. Factory farms are an extreme of ecosystem illness. A main component of rescue is sanctuary homes for rescued animals. For these homes to not be merely mass housing, they will require design as permaculture + habitat restoration projects on the scale of what we know now as cities. This design involves knowledge of biodiversity. That is the "diversity" I referred to.
The referenced issues are not even remotely interdependent EXCEPT for the ease of fund raising and the subsequent squandering.
I doubt that your newsletter has many subscribers as your ideas are yesterday's news.
Much as USAID was wasteful,
So is money given to the multipurpose organizations.
I stopped giving to PETA when at a red carpet event a comedian went on a "I hate white rant". Later I corresponded with Ingrid and she informed that she had to take the bad with the good in fund raising.
Communities of diverse species involve interdependence. Farm animal rescue has many diverse and interdependent dimensions. Formation of a new kind of rescue community is one of those dimensions --- providing homes for people and rescued animals. Animals from factory farms and animals from ecosystems we have wrecked will have to live in healthy ecosystems together with humans. For these reasons, Wayne's substack is eminently worth serious reading and discussion.
OF course you do not see the problem because you are fund raising via the multiple cause

I think there is also another reason: Customers demand cheap food. "Cheap" means putting low cost before animal welfare.
I put the blame for all this unnecessary animal abuse and suffering squarely on the consumers for demanding animal products, all kinds. It is their greed, too, and insensitivity, that enables these businesses to exist and continue.

Say something that means something. Enough with the "I'm so smart gobblygook."
I don't think I was saying something meaningless. I was, however, taking advantage of Wayne's "legalese" skills and for that, my apoiogies.
I felt there was a lot of meaning in motherharps's post. Though I agree it was very smart.
Let's be nice, Constance!
Are there any other countries that do a much better job of enforcing animal welfare laws, and what can we learn from them?
It's a good question. I'm honestly not aware of a single country that seems instructive as a model...
